We all understand the simple things that take us towards our goals and away from them. We do a run, we get fitter, we lay on the couch, we get less fit.
But what about the things that take us forwards in the short term only to take is backwards in the long run? Smoking, drinking, drugs, gambling, pornography, binge eating. All of these things feel great whilst we are doing them and that's why they are such easy habits to slip into. But what are the effects afterwards?
I call this a boomerang and identifying yours is the first step to replacing them with different habits.
On the flip side to that we have slingshots. Things that feel crappy whilst doing them, but give you the best rewards. What these will be will depend on what you currently find difficult. For some, getting out to go to training on a cold winter's morning could be one. For others organising the stack of paperwork that is pilings up, or cleaning out the shed!
Write a list of your slingshots and boomerangs and you will have a clearer understanding of how you can reach your goals.
